Aaah. We've got a slight problem. You see, this site uses a few Flash tricks. They require Flash Player 10 or newer, which you don't seem to have installed. That's sad, because you're now missing out the nice touches. Don't worry, though, with or without Flash all content is available to you. If you want to install the newest Flash Player, you can get it at Adobe's.
Hello! I am Niels. I love code, pixels and interactivity, and I've done stuff with them.
Here, let me show you!
Born in midst of our cheesy centre, Gouda, I am about as Dutch as you can get, though that isn't particularly descriptive. A few short years after this happy occasion (according to my parents, at least), we moved to a small village in North Holland where I went to primary school. Usually, I spent most of my time there watching out the window, severly disliking the boring tasks we were set. After that, I finished High School (HAVO) with two fingers up my nose whilst hacking the school computers with my free hand. I briefly deliberated moving up to the next level, VWO, but frankly I couldn't be bothered with more of the same, except a little harder.
I started studying Mechanical Enigneering which didn't turn out to be my cup of tea so I switched to Technical Business Management, during which I had my main focus on internal logistics. After earning my Bachelor of Engineering title I decided to gain some more in-depth knowledge about myself and head to art school. Given my deep interest in digital media and computer programming I went with Digital Media Design, a field of study which fuses computers (or any thing digital, really) and art into a relatively new form of expression. Enjoying myself thoroughly, I graduated and walked away with both the Bachelor of Art and Technology and European Media Master of Arts titles.
During my Master Thesis I researched and developed a responsive painting based on genetica. I have had the honour to exhibit this work in the famous Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
When we were working on our respective graduation projects in 2008, a few fellow students and me started our own interactive agency, Catch Interactive. My usual tasks include concept design, technical direction and, of course, programming. Catch Interactive has since worked for clients such as Forbo Flooring, Icova, Mokum Mariteam, Dissident-wear and VNU Exhibitions.
I am fond of anything that exceeds the current paradigms of gaming and interactive experiences. In arts, my main focus is the building of installation art, perferably for use in public buildings and spaces. I believe that by placing art in a public space I can entertain and please people when, for example, waiting for their train to arrive and thus enhance their experience of an otherwise less interesting moment.
I also believe that using digital arts commercial messages can be made fun again and can offer people experiences that they voluntarily engage in. In my ideal world, all advertisements are fun rather than intrusive, so people will enjoy them instead of despise them.
When not working, among other things I enjoy cooking and eating the result of that labour, reading, watching films, taking walks in the forest and playing games (and generally thinking about games and how they can be used for learning).
I've worked on a few interactive installations. Most of the software is written in Flash, often using webcams or Arduinos to get that pesky computer out of the way.
Various different websites have benefitted from my skills. Most of my work has been on the back-end, though interactivity on the front-end side of things is also from my hand. Mostly ActionScript 3 work and a little JavaScript. I am currently honing my JavaScript kung-fu, as it is finally taking off and enabling broadly accessible interactive interfaces.
That which does not fit shall fit here.
